Mission: The Forgotten Outpost
Location: Office level DS3
Timeline: 239412.12

{ooc: I added some stuff, fill in add or change where you want. He won't call her Jo in the office as he is mentally operating as a manger, outside of the office he is one of the gang and will be on a first name basis. I am picturing the alarm as a "pull-and-go stunt" }

[ON]

JoAnne had left the Ticonderoga after two years of service. She liked flying and the passenger ship was surprisingly stable. The young human woman was a fleeter and as such was embarrassed by her motion sickness but she was coping well. She had had a little too much shore leave. The area was chaotic. So far hostilities were minor, but they were becoming more frequent and threatening to not only destabilize trade routes and convoys, but endanger colonies. Jo had read somewhere that new pergium deposits had been found in the disputed territories causing a sort of old fashioned gold rush of get rich quick schemers that further stretched the resources of not only Starbases and starships patrolling the region but also of civilian colonies and outposts. The northwest territory represented the greatest opportunity for exploration and discovery. Since the Hobus star exploded the Romulan’s were forced to face inward on themselves. They no longer represented a galactic power and were mostly refugees. For the remaining powers the territory was a new source of territory and planetary bodies to be exploited. Much of it was unexplored though at least by the Federation. A Miranda class starship was very well suited to that task. Jo briefly wondered how the Hobus star went Nova, but she believed that it had something to do with the Tal‘Shiar.

“Attention all passengers please return to your seats. We are approaching Deep Space Three and will be docking in ten minutes.” The automated computer chimed.

Jo padded back to her seat and strapped in. The inertial dampeners fully compensated for the deceleration but she couldn’t help but feel just a tad queasy, it was mostly psychological, she hated flying after all. Once the liner had docked, Jo made her way to Customs and border security, but being a Starfleet Officer she was conducted through rapidly and found herself in the lounge. It was then that she glimpsed the Oracle through the lounge viewport . The ship was large graceful and fully modern. She did wonder why it was named ”Oracle” as most Sovereign class starships were named after great events or ideas. Stranger things had happened. She had once her of someone naming a class M planet “Bob”.

Jo made her way over to the gangway leading to DS3. She checked in with security and asked to be conducted to her Supervisor.

She took the turbo lift up to the office level to the ops section and buzzed the buzzer.

"Ensign Jo grant to see Lt Geno". the computer announced.

The Operations officer keyed a few keystrokes to hide the strobing screens. Most people found it distracting. He rose and approached the door.
“Enter,” he said to the computer and the doors opened.

“Ensign Grant, welcome,” he said ushering her in. He had been reading the staff assignments for the Starbase and knew she had been assigned to his department. The computer had let him know she was on station when she went through clearance. He was looking forward to having her help. He could fix a replicator, heat exchangers, plumbing, even a transporter, but getting the computer to do some of the advanced things he wanted to try required someone with a different skill set than what he had.

“So, how was your trip?” He asked. As he sat back down in his chair.

"Comfortable, more like a liner than a freighter. Please call me Jo. Here are my transfer orders and training jacket, Sir. Jo said handing him the PADD.

"What sorts of things are you going to want me to do around here?" Jo asked.

Lt. Geno looked at the pad and verified the items required of him.
"Computer, Receive Ensign Gast and set her as active duty. Send her PaDD a list of available quarters for her to choose from and the list of systems that are currently off line or in need of repair," He said.

"Normally, I would let you explore the station for a day or two. But operations is a bit short staffed for a station this size," he said to her handing her back the PaDD. He reached over to the console and keyed in a display of all the items that were off line or should be off line. The showed up in red as an outline of the station was displayed and rotated.
"As you can see, we have a lot of things to get working," he said.

"We also have duty on the command deck with flight control and power management, communications, material and personnel logistics, environmental systems, the recreation systems, and anything else that Engineering, Security, and Command assigns us," He said giving her an idea.

He leaned back.
"The traditional thinking is that we specialize into areas for efficiency. This works great on paper and with a full staff. Right now, we need to work at cross training our people. I need my team leaders that know enough to oversee what is going on in other areas and can handle the craziness of bridge duty too," Lt. Geno said in a serious tone. Yes, Starfleet had a two teir track for advancement and Geno knew that. But he needed those on the technical track to also engage with others when possible for right now.

He continued with a smile, "In short time, flight control on the command deck is going to be like standing on a Terran ant hill and trying to swat only specific ants. While the computer handles a lot of the traffic, we know that captains and crews tend to deviate from our instructions. We need to watch for people who have the ability adapt to the unexpected and can stay calm and on task. We also need to figure out who cannot. We also need to watch for people who are natural leaders, that can encourage, and teach those under them."

He tapped a few more keys and the computer spat out a warning, "Unable to comply, invalid sequence of instructions."

He started to key some commands trying to reprogram his instruction set. "I see my role as getting you want you need, trying to help prioritize things when there are competing items that need to be addressed, and handle the administration side of things," He said. He gave a frustrated look and stood up.

"Ensign, Lets get you stuff to your room and lets go fix the power relay t247 so our diplomatic guests don't start complaining," Lt. Geno said.

"Okay Sir, sounds like a plan." Jo said.

Just then the fire control system gave a warning off the Promenade deck. Geno jumped to his feet grabbing his PaDD and headed for the door. When he got out the his office door he waved for Jo to come.

"Have you ever been a fire fighter, Jo?" he asked there was the excitement of a boy watching firetrucks also concern as fires on space stations were incredibly deadly.

Yes Sir. I have on a starship. its part of the damage control team training. Are the fire suppression systems out too"? Jo said running after him..

“We have to make sure things are working correctly. The monitoring software and sensors are over 20 years old and need adjustments. Lots of false reading,” Geno said heading for stairs taking them two at a time instead of the lift.

"Looks like this assignment is going to keep me on my toes." Jo said.

She got up and followed him.
