For Svetlana the weekend was not a complete bust, hearing that someone had fallen to their death up on the promenade deck some 80 meters above the promenade deck, she had heard through unofficial channels that because the death was of a Commodore, SCIS would probably be handling the entire case; however with a full team the investigations would take around a week to complete, but without a full team, and the arrival of Dr. Rex Smith, the Medical Examiner assigned to the incomplete SCIS Team, she had her work cut out.

Meeting Dr. Smith at the partially completed SCIS Medical Examination Facility, she found Dr. Smith having a cup of coffee as he quickly and efficiently had the clothes of the commodore removed, with the help of two brand new Corpsmen, who were ready to up chuck the contents of their breakfast onto the floor, but with a few words from Dr. Smith, the two corpsmen rather dumped the body out of its Commodore uniform onto the autopsy table.

Finishing his cup of coffee, Dr. Smith began his examination, or for the lack of it, “an examination”. Recording his findings on a ME Recording system that was not tied into the ships main LCARS, nor was it able to be desciphered, for it only went to the Chief of Starfleet Operations, so neither the Captain, his Executive Officer, nor the Chief of Security, and his subordinate officers, and the Chief of Communication could ever change the findings of the Chief ME, who was a Forensic Pathologists.

Soon a small sizeable crowd of Starfleet security officers and Investigators from the station were now in attendance as Dr. Smith continued his Post- Mortum.

With the body on his table, he was now able to do a full forensic Postmotum.

First it was corroborated that the body was that of retired Commodore Carroll J. O’Connor formerly the commander of Task Force Sierra (TF78) operating around the Orion Syndicates operational area, his job was to interdict any Orion Slavers, destroy any Orion ships, and try to find the basis for several highly potent narcotics, that made Heroin, look like a walk in the park, even Fentanyl was water compared to the liquid from the drug.

Retired some 15 years ago, the Commodore had suffered several seizures and was now suffering from advanced Alzheimers. Parkinson's, and failing eyesight. Plus he also had a touch of Methicillin-Resistant drugs containing Methicillin. His only living relative was a younger Daughter by the name of Mrs. Saundra O’Connel from the Topeka Kansas Refugee Complex in Kansas.

Continuing with examining the blood for any blood born viruses, bacteria, or Toxinas, A toxicological screen, was conducted along with a Chemistry Panels, and even his prescribed drug levels for his many ailments were checked. Taking only a few seconds the results came back ‘Negative’ for any toxins or anti-viral antibodies. Even taking a sperm count revealed a normal amount of sperm per volume.

Next with a holographic simulator, they were able to piece back the Commodore's body that was now nothing more than the splintered ends of broken bones. However Holographic Exams showed that he two severe heart attacks, which forced him on the old Drug Digitalis, or Nitroglycerin, since he was allergic to the most commonly used Heart Medicines.

Falling only exacerbated his body in the complete destruction of his skeletal system. While this was going on, old Transporter subroutines on his previous beaming were used to further identify the corpse. So after an hour-long Medico/Legal Autopsy, even Dr. Smith was unable to conclude how Commodore O'Connor had actually died. So he put down UCOD (Unknown Cause of Death) for now.

With a UCOD, Dr. Smith would have to pull up Commodore O'Connors' complete Medical history, including his last appointment with a Physician. That would take somewhere a few days to a week to complete, but with only one patient in the cooler, Dr. Smith could take the time to read everything about the deceased.

As Dr. Smith continued, he finally said that an unknown "UCOD", plus several other factors, resulting in him falling was the cause of death.

Hearing a lot of moans as a senior MCPO of the Security section began naming name to do the investigations… ‘Henderson, Fitpatrick and Barnes you three have been picked to complete the investigation on the death of Commodore O’Conner.

I expect you folks to have this messy case finished by Friday at the close of business.

Soon the grumbling trio left the door, while the rest of the other Security personnel were now asking Dr. Smith what to look for in cases like this, and in an hour he had told the security officers there much of what he knew.
With these folks now gone, all that was left was for the same two Corpsmen to place Commodore’s pulpy body back into a body bag for shipment back to earth for burial.

Finally with the two of them in the Autopsy room, Svetlana introduced herself and said, how about we go to your office to talk, in a firm but a non-threatening voice.

Dr. Smiths Inner Office

The office of Dr. Smith, looked like your ordinary office, except that the furnishings were in the style of a Medical Examiner, mostly a large Microscope that filled one bulkhead, thousands of slides, and then there were the large glass vats of body parts floating in a formalin solution, sitting down in a comfortable chair, and now facing Dr. Smith; Svetlana said in a firm but a non-threatening voice

Though we are newly arrived from our respective bases, as the SCIS Medical Examiner, and also a SCIS Special Agent, I am going to ask you to stop from actively performing Medico/Legal Post Mortums, when not dispatched through the Stations Security Communication section. Such as the one you just performed, I know that you weren't called out, and this sort of dropped in on you; but first let us do our work, then if we need the help of a Medico/Legal expert, from our investigations, we'll call you. All Medico/Legal work is to be authorized only by the Senior Agent in Charge, which is me, and not by the on-scene Security Officer in charge, or the Chief of Security or the Stations Commander. It is vital that the COD be examined by a qualified Medical Examiner.

“SCIS Internal Memorandum #2104, dtd: (01-24-2393) States...
the Medical Examiner is to be contacted through the On-Duty Special Agent in Charge before he/she is to perform any Medico/Legal work to determine and established a COD. This is to prevent any legal issues pertaining to the death of a Civilian, VIPS, Senior Officers and Flag Officers, or any unexplained COD's.

If the on-scene SSA determines that the need for a Medico/Legal examination is required to determine an unknown COD, the on duty ME will be notified, and then respond IMMEDIATELY TO the crime scene unless canceled by the on-scene SSA. If the ME is unable to respond quickly, within a 1 hour (60 minutes) time frame upon the discovery of the deceased.

The body of the deceased will be inserted into a Stasis Body Bag (which has been designed to keep all microbial fresh for at least 24-72 hours. The bodybag containing the deceased will then be escorted by security personnel to the SCIS Crime Lab Morgue Where it wil be entered as evidence, and placed in a morgue cabinet, till the body can be examined by the ME.

With that Dr. Smith, welcome to Team #95, replied Svetlana as she got up from her chair, and walked out of Dr. Smith's Office. Watching her leave Dr. Smith said nothing but poured himself a new cup of coffee, it was going to be one of those days, but right now he had a lot of material to read on the Commodore.
