A new Command team member.

Finchley read the set of orders and couldn't help smiling, this would come as a bit of a surprise, hopefully in a good way. Tapping his COMM badge he said "Commander Kerr to Lieutenant Korial, can you come to my office immediately."

It took Niali a few minutes to begin her journey or at least it felt like that, to Finchley’s office. She had been down in engineering trying to sort out a dispute between Ensigns Chavez and Lake regarding cabin assignments. Of course it had not really been about that but something deeper and Niali had arranged to see them together the next day. Advising them to continue working she then received the message.

A couple of minutes later she stood outside his office and smoothed her hair and uniform before pressing the chime.

"Enter" Finchley called from the back of his office.

Niali stepped into the office, of course off duty was something way different from this environment. Here it was total professionalism. Commander Kerr, you asked to see me?” She said.

"Yes, I did" Finchley replied.

Turning round and walking over to his desk, Finchley said "Thank you for coming so quickly Counsellor, can I get you anything before we begin?"

“No, no thank you Commander.” She said whilst a little shiver of worry set through her.

Finchley didn't stand on ceremony, he walked over and stood in front of Niali and in a rather stern manner said "It's come to my attention that you're dress code isn't appropriate Lieutenant, what do you have to say for yourself?"

Niali wondered how much worse her day could get, she was always very careful of herself and her uniform whilst on duty. She sighed. “In what way is my dress code inappropriate Commander?”

"Well, you're not wearing the correct rank pips" Finchley said, producing a small box and opening it, revealing two small gold discs inside.

"Lieutenant Junior Grade Niali Korial, it's my pleasure to inform you that as of this time and date you're hereby promoted to the rank of full Lieutenant, along with all the long hours and thankless endless tasks that go with it" he laughed, taking the small gold discs out and placing them in their spots on her collar.

Niali actually had difficulty standing and swayed, “Finchl….sorry Commander, what!” She exclaimed. “I had no idea!” She grinned like an idiot and felt her new pips with her finger. Then gathering herself back in to professional mode said “thank you sir.”

Finchley stooped slightly to catch Naili as she swayed, but then saw she was just overcome with joy at her promotion. He couldn't stop himself from giving her a big hug and saying "Well, given your work me and my Polaris team, and how you've conducted yourself here, fitting in straight away and getting everyone tested to see whether we're mad enough or not to go out on our next mission, it's well deserved. There's something else I need to talk to you about, but this does require you take a seat, so I can sit at my desk looking all serious and smokingly hot, yet mysterious, all at the same time."

She raised an eyebrow, “Thank you Commander I would like that drink now please, coffee, hot, vanilla sugar and cream please.” She sat crossed her legs and surreptitiously touched her pips again. “And may I say Commander that, to me you always look smoking hot.”

Finchley fetched Niali her drink and also an apple tea for himself. Sitting in the chair behind his desk he replied "Thank you Lieutenant" then tried to look all three things he'd described, but realised it didn't work.

"I've also got the neural blocker for you" Finchley said, taking a hypo from his desk and putting it up to just behind Niali's right ear . A light squeeze and the blocker was in place "There, that ought start working immediately."

She jumped a little as the hypo depressed. She would wait until she slept to see if it was working. she nodded “thank you.”

"Actually it's on a genuine serious note that I have to say this next part" Finchley went on. "We're about to head out on our next mission shortly, and the Oberon has the need for a Second Officer. The Captain and myself have had a good long discussion about it, and we would like offer 'you' the opportunity to take up our Second Officer position. What do you say Lieutenant, are you up for it?"

“Yes Sir, I definitely am” Niali replied.

"Good" Finchley replied, "If you have any questions, they'll have to wait till after the mission briefing, I need to prepare for it, so you're dismissed Lieutenant, and congratulations again."
