Awakening

-Sickbay-

A blue blur charged out the main sickbay doors. Signified Edgeware's departure and with all the other main medical personnel spread around the Oberon. Ensign Penny McTaggart was left in charge. She had only recently been transferred to Oberon. Following her fall from grace on another vessel. There she had been the Chief Science Officer. Here she was just a medic plus busted back to Ensign.

One of her standing duties was to keep an eye on the Captain. Moving over to where he lay Penny looked up at the biobeds readings.

“ Oh my.” She said.

The lights in the room started to be noticed in his eyes as he opened them slowly Trensu the light hurt for a moment as his eyes started to focus. His head still hurt a little as he blinked a few times. Trensu could hear people talking now as the sick bay and the sound of the biobeds beeping could be heard. He looked to either side slowly seeing beds in the sick bay with crew members on them. He knew instinctively something was not right. Trensu tried to say something but nothing came out at first. He swallowed then relaxed.

Looking up now at the nurse. the back up at the lights. "Report!" could be heard loudly in his raspy voice.

Penny panicked. She started to look around but everyone was busy.

“ Oh….I…Doctor Edgeware is helping Commander Finchley. We are having a wee spot of trouble sir. “ Penny stammered

"Trouble? you might want to be specific." Said Trensu putting one of his hands over his eyes. "and did anyone get the number of that shuttle that hit me?" Trensu asked jokingly.

What should she do? Was it wise to tell him the truth? He was the Captain. But he’d been out cold in a coma for a few weeks. Would the shock of hearing what had happened to be too much for him? McTaggard nodded.

“ Well?” Then Penny told the Commander everything.

“ Then Doctor Edgeware got a call from Dr. Niali and he charged off.” She finished.

He still looked up and listened to everything he was told. Trensu gave a sigh. "I take a nap and the world goes to hell," Trensu said jokingly. He looked at the nurse sitting up slowly.

"So where is Finchley now?" asked Trensu.

Penny was about to speak when Steven stomped over to them muttering.

“ Walking around with a huge gash like that. If tears open again they’ll want to know why he was allowed out of sickbay. But with the Captain still down. He has duties to see to. They can’t blame me. What was I to…Hello Captain…….” Steven did a double take.” Captain you’re awake!!!”

Trensu smiled at Steven "I am up. but let's say not running at full speed doctor." replied the Captain. "I am good for now see to Niali" said Trensu.

Just then an alarm rang stridently out from Niali’s biobed her vital signs bottoming out as she began to seize and turn blue.

“ WHAT THE!!!” Steven shouted.

Finchley entered Sickbay just as the alarm bell sounded out from Niali's biobed and he watched as the medical staff reacted.

Steven charged past Finchley pushing Ensign McTaggard in front of the XO.

“ No no no no McTaggard tells the Commander,” Edgeware said as he rushed to Niali’s bio bed.

“ Ouch. Commander Kerr sir…..The Captain is awake.” She stammered

Finchley looked over at the Captain and was glad to see him awake. Turning back to Penny he nodded his thanks and said "Thank you, Ensign, please carry on with your duties, I'll have a word with the good Doctor in regards to his...manners" Finchley said, looking in Steven's direction.

Though he was alarmed at what was happening with Niali, he knew he'd be in the way if he went over. Better to let the medical staff get on with taking care of her and he could see her a little later. His duties came first and foremost above personal feelings, that had been drummed into him from early in his career.

Walking over to Trensu he said, "I'm glad to see you awake Sir, how are you feeling?"

"Like, I got run over by a shuttle." He replied with a smile. "Finchley, I will live. Go to Niali I think she needs you more than me right now." suggested Trensu slipping off the BIO bed and standing but still looking a little weak.

"No Sir, I told Doctor Edgeware I would come to see him directly I gave Admiral Horn my mission report so that he could fix me up properly, allowing me to return to duty. My duties come first before personal matters, so I'll see you on the bridge once I'm done here" Finchley replied.

"In the meantime, I'll give you the same verbal report I gave Admiral Horn" he continued and promptly did so over the next few minutes.

Steven looked up at Niali’s readings and shook his head. Something was wrong. She should be starting to pick up.

Why do her vitals keep dropping? Something else is going on here. We’ll have to look into this later. For now, she needs oxygen! Steven thought as he grabbed a breathing mask and rammed it over her head. Then he pressed a hypo to her arm.

“ Come on now come on now..her coloring is returning….but this should not of happened. What have we missed?” Steven said

Steven paced up and down trying to think. Why was Niali not getting any stronger? Something was going on here. What had they missed?

He stood at the foot of her biobed thinking.

Ooo.. It’s got to be the wound on her thigh. Could it be her symbiont? No, he’s healthy but Niali is failing. Why. She was shot in the leg…..leg…..leg…. Steven looked down at her uniform. He felt the fabric in his hand.

“ Oh, my……could it be that simple? This rarely happens but it’s the only thing it could be….if it got stuck in the pulmonary vein….” Steven’s hands ran over the biobed control surface. That encased Niali.

A medic looked at him puzzled.

“ When Niali was injured a small piece of ionized cloth. Got forced into her bloodstream. It has traveled to her heart and is interfering with her blood flow…..see look at her pulmonary vein. We missed it because this rarely happens. Prep her for surgery now!” He said?

It took a while to remove but the operation was successful. Edgeware was confident she would be ok.

Trensu had been sitting to one side of the room when he got his balance fully back and the nurse gave him the OK. He knew he had to get back to the bridge. With all that had been going on Trensu was glad that Niali would be ok. Trensu turned to Finchley "When she is awake and you ready I will be on the bridge. I will see you there." said Trensu.

"Yes Sir, I'll see you there" Finchley replied.

He walked over to Steven and said "Doctor, as promised, I've returned do you can properly treat me for my wound before I go back to the bridge to see the Captain? Once I've finished my duty shift, I'd like a word with you."

Nodding Steven tended to Finchley's wounds and then he gave a satisfied nod.

“ Well, Commander that’s you all fixed up. Your good to return to duty. Just to let you know Niali has started to show signs of improvement. We are very hopeful she will also be up and about soon.” Steven said
