Starbase Deep Space Three

disappeared under mysterious circumstances in early 2394. The majority of the senior officers were in pursuit of an escaped Borg vessel at the time and thus survived. The Amargosa SystemIn 2371 Doctor Tolian Soran was successful in destroying the Amargosa system’s primary star, devastating the eight planets in its orbit in the process. Deep Space Three has since been relocated to the former-Amargosa system in the decades following the Dominion War. The system is a devastated shell of its former glory. Decades after the event, the debris caused by the exploration still needs to settle, resulting in asteroids with erratic orbits, and ever-changing clear patches. Deep Space Three’s resources are consistently deployed to clear safe thoroughfares for the civilian traffic in the area. Although remote by Federation standards, USS Oberon's location is optimal for the far reaches of the Beta Quadrant and study of Amargosa for the aftereffects of the use of a trilithium weapon, and further exploration of the nearby Shackleton Expanse.

Shackleton Expanse

The Shackleton Expanse is a largely unexplored region of space in the Beta Quadrant, in and around the Narendra sector, is patrolled by USS Oberon. The remains of the Romulan Star Empire and Numerous spatial anomalies and other interstellar phenomena can be found within the Expanse. the USS Oberon's primary mission is to conduct exploration of The Expanse, a dangerous and challenging area of space.

The Romulans

In the years since the Hobus supernova, the Romulan people have endured a decline and fall unprecedented since the formation of the Star Empire. Factionalisation and indecision, and the loss of their primary dilithium source have shattered the Empire in two. Factions allied to the Romulan Navy and rump of the Tal Shiar agency have remained stubbornly faithful to the Romulan Star Empire, and have declared themselves as the only legitimate political representatives of the Romulan peoples. Younger, more radical Romulan nobles found in the Senate have seceded from the Romulan Star Empire, and declared the New Romulan Republic in its stead, hoping to bind new systems to their cause by offering suffrage, freedom, and equality before the law. The Federation has accepted embassies from both polities in the last few years.

The Klingons

in generations following the Dominion War, Klingons chafed and grumbled under the measured rule of Chancellor Martok, a staunch ally of the Federation. As his rule grew longer, and his age greater, rumblings began that he was soft, and preventing the Empire’s young warriors from achieving glory in combat with their natural enemies. Martok’s death, and the Hobus supernova, changed the calculation and a new Chancellor rose to power. The Klingon High Council has repeatedly and aggressively attempted to profit from the Romulan weaknesses, destabilizing the space around the Shackleton Expanse, and even on occasion firing on Starfleet vessels patrolling the official border with the Romulan Star Empire.
