Style Guide – USS Oberon

All posts should begin:

Mission post entries should be in the third person past eg.

‘Commander th'Shrannok looked up from his PADD in despair.’

Sentences should start with a capital letter, and end with a full stop, as noted above.

Longer sentences should be broken up by commas, or, more rarely, a semi-colon eg.

‘Commander th'Shrannok looked up from his PADD in despairs, placing his head in his hands as his antennae twitched.’

Speech is indicated by the use of “ to open and ” to close. These are used to indicate all physical speech, including when speaking via a commbage or comm channel. =/\= or other indications do not need to be used to indicate such speech – a narrative description will be sufficient for context eg.

‘Commander th'Shrannok looked up from his PADD in despair, placing his head in his hands as his antennae twitched. He tapped the commbadge on his chest, opening a channel to Lieutenant Sakaan. “Sakaan, is the report true?” he asked, voice hoarse from emotion, “Have they closed The Bistro!?”

The Vulcan Intelligence Officer's voice crackled over the comm line, conveying no emotion. “I am afraid Commander that the reports are true; The Bistro shall be closing!”’ Internal monologues or streams-of-consciousness should be indicated by first person present text in the same manner as speech but shown by italicised text.

‘Commander th'Shrannok looked up from his PADD in despair, placing his head in his hands as his antennae twitched. He tapped the commbadge on his chest, opening a channel to Lieutenant Sakaan. “Sakaan, is the report true?” he asked, voice hoarse from emotion, “Have they closed The Bistro!?”

The Vulcan Intelligence Officer's voice crackled over the comm line, conveying no emotion. “I am afraid Commander that the reports are true; The Bistro shall be closing!” Ithahr closed his eyes. I can't believe this, he thought. My favourite eating place! Closing! This is a travesty!’

Italics in Nova can be used by using the html markings < i > without spaces at the beginning of the italicised passage and < /i > at the end of the italicised section.

Ranks should not be abbreviated – it should always be Captain and Lieutenant, and not Capt. or Lt.

Place names, names (where appropriate) and object names eg The Bistro, Deep Space Three and USS Pathfinder should be capitalised.

PADD should always be capitalised

TAG ANY – this is a general tag for response or reaction to what’s going on. After all, Starfleet officers don’t just react to their immediate responsibilities. Update your comment or speech ABOVE this type of tag so that other writers know where they can jump in.
