Sickbay’s Good As A Rest

Posted on Thursday December 15th, 2022 @ 5:43pm by Lieutenant Finchley Kerr & Lieutenant Commander Alaina Trywhitt-Duffy

Mission: Shore Leave
Location: Sickbay USS Oberon
Timeline: Current

[ON]

Alaina Trywhitt-Duffy was enjoying a particular love of hers, a Pacifican fruit shento. The cool mix of the blue fruit and ice slipping down her throat made her think of the white shores and blue green oceans of her home-world. She leant back feet up on her desk and closed her eyes drifting over the oceans as she sipped.

Both Finchley and Karadis entered Sickbay as they'd been reported to do by the Executive Officer. There was no-one there to greet them or ask them why they were there, so Finchley took the initiative and headed for the CMO's office, he still knew the way.

Looking into the office, as the door was open, he noted there was an officer sitting enjoying a drink. Coughing gently to gain some attention, he said "Lieutenants Kerr and Karadis reporting to Sickbay as per reques...no, orders, from Lieutenant Commander Korial."

Alaina took her feet off the desk and put her drink down. “Ah yes she said to expect you.” She picked up two paDDs and glanced over each one. “She said that you appear to have been through a lot but are unable to explain why.” Please, take a bio bed each. I will begin with you Lieutenant Karadis.” She said to the Klingon woman.

Karadis looked at Finchley, then turned round walked over and lay down on one of the bio-beds.

Finchley, as he turned round and made his way to his own bio-bed replied "Why we were where we were, yes, but not about why we're in the physical state we're in."

“Yes Lieutenant, but all I am interested in is your physical condition and what I can do for you both.” She smiled at Kardis and began her examination. The biosensor immediately alarmed. “Lieutenant would you please undress I need to look at your torso. Please put the gown on you will find to the side of you. I will engage the privacy screens. Whilst I do so I will look at Lieutenant Finchley.” She touched a switch that made the area surrounding the biobed opaque.”

"Commander I've had to undress and change in front of entire squads before, I'm not bashful" Karadis replied "but if that's what you want, then ok" she finished.

She approached Finchley, as soon as she got within a foot of him she sniffed. “Lieutenant is that alcohol I can smell?”

"No, that's mouth wash you can smell Sir" Finchley replied, "When we returned from our last mission, it was pointed out both of us" and he thunbed between himself and Karadis who was behind the screen "that we smelled. That wasn't difficult to believe, given the last few days we've not had access to anything to clean ourselves up with. If you don't believe me, please feel free to run any test on me you wish to find out if there's any alcohol in my system."

She smiled at him, “I will If I find the need to Lieutenant.” She began her biosensor readings and immediately tutted. “Your labs are way out of wack, you need decent food and drink, I am presuming of course that where you were you did not receive adequate nutrition? Please take off your clothes Lieutenant.” She said in a business like but compassionate manner. She turned and erected the privacy screens to ensure his modestly. “Are you all right back there Lieutenant Karadis?” She asked.

"She's never been alright, mostly left and a little bit bat shit crazy" Finchley said.

"When we're done here Bird, you do realise there'll be a price to pay for that" Karadis replied "And you won't know where or when."

Finchley just smiled to himself, glad to hear that Karadis hadn't lost her sense of humour.

"I'm fine Sir" Karadis replied to the Doctor.

Alaina smiled to herself noting the easy rapport the pair had. She turned back and a gasp escaped her before she could stop it. “The Lieutenant’s body was covered in bruises of different shades, there was hardly an inch that was not. She walked round the bed to see the same on his back. “I’m just going to examine you the old fashioned Doctor way, don’t worry my hands aren’t cold. She gently pressed the area surrounding his liver where a particularly nasty black bruise lay. He jumped. “I take it this is painful Lieutenant Kerr?”

“In a ‘I want to scream’ when you touch it kind of a way, yes Sir.” Finchley replied.

“WOOS” could be heard from behind Karadis screen.

“Be quiet Lieutenant Karadis, you’re next.” Alaina took another scanner from the bench. “I’m sorry Lieutenant this may hurt a little I need to scan your liver.” She placed the small piece of equipment on his skin and pushed a little, “sorry” she said. “Oh, right, I need you to lie down now.” She asked. “You have a rather nasty laceration to your liver. I can heal it for you but..”

"There's normally bad news when there's a 'but' involved" Finchley replied "What's the end of the sentence Doctor?"

It means a stay here for at least three days. And time off afterwards, ten days complete rest or so. The liver is not very good at repairing any insults thrown at it so it needs time and rest. Also you will have to refrain from alcohol for a few months. As a doctor I would advise you to consider giving it up altogether unless you want a replacement.” Alaina smiled.

"I don't mind the rest" Finchley replied "I could do with it to be honest, I haven't felt this tired in a while. I'll stay off the drink for a few months as you've said, but I may have the odd glass of wine with a meal afterwards, in moderation of course" he added, holding up his hands.

Once she had him lying down she began to examine more of his body. Although he was obviously fit and well muscled there were signs of slight malnutrition as though he had been starved at some point. She moved down his body and gasped. “I erm, Lieutenant, it looks very much to me like you have electrical burns in your groin and genitals. You’ve been tortured.” She said more to herself than anybody. She turned away to collect herself, she had seen torture like this a long time ago. Turning back she said, “I am going to do a full body scan, full blood and brain work ups. You, Lieutenant Kerr are going to get the best medical treatment I can give. You too Lieutenant Karadis, when I get round to you!” She remarked across the biobed.

"Yes, those were 'gifts' from some unappreciative questioners" Finchley replied "The more we didn't speak, the more they tried to make us. Speaking for Karadis and me, we appreciate all the treatment and care you can give us."

"Ten days of it certainly makes you a little bit tender" Karadis said "What I wouldn't give to meet up with them again on a level playing field."

“I tend to agree with you Lieutenant Karadis if you would care to point me in their direction I could give them something to remember me by.” she said. She stopped and looked at Finchley. You deserve the best care the Fleet can give you after what you have been through. She leant down and whispered “may seem a strange question but have you noted any problems urinating or any other untoward affects?” She asked delicately.

"It's ok Doctor, you can ask me any questions and speak freely in front of Karadis, we literally have no secrets from one another" Finchley whispered back "and yes, I have noticed on occasion that there's been blood in my urine. Not all the time, but a couple of times. There's also been blood in my stool, but the odd thing is, as much as I've tried to eat small meals on a regular basis, I don't seem to be 'going' very often...if you see what I mean."

Alaina looked thoughtful, “is this all since your away visit?

"Blood in my urine, yes, since our last away mission, blood in my stool and infrequency of me going, no, that's been going on for the last couple of months" Finchley replied.

She smiled at him wondering how he could be pleasant considering what he had been through. She spoke softly. “Well Lieutenant if you can put up with being here a few days I can sort everything out for you. You have some bruising over your kidney also so that may be the reason for the blood in the urine. As for the bowel problem I will look into it. I mean…investigate it.…” she could feel her cheeks going red and wasn’t sure why. “I’ll set you up with labs and some scans and I’m going to transfuse you I am very sure your HB is low. So, just lie back, relax and leave yourself in my hands.”

"Well, I'm not used lying still for any prolonged periods of time Doctor" Finchley replied "But if that's what's best for me, then I'll happily do so. I can't say the same for my colleague" he added, nodding his head towards Karadis.

Alaina looked thoughtful, “I could always sedate the pair of you, how about it Lieutenant Karadis, a good sleep Might be just what you are looking for?

"No, no sedation!" Karadis said strongly "I'm able to cope with my discomfort Doctor, thank you."

Finchley looked at Alaina, his eyebrows lifting in an 'I told you so' movement. "There's something else Doctor, when we were being seen to, we were given an injection 'Phenochloroethisol', I saw the bottle on the table. Have you any idea why they'd use that on us?"

“Yes Lieutenant I do, mostly it is a ‘truth’ drug but PH sol has a nasty little back story. It doesn’t leave your system, so whatever happens to you on your return can be transmitted by yourself to whoever gave you the drug. Have you had any blackouts, faints or moments when you cannot remember what you have been doing?” She began to scan him for the components of the drug

“No” Finchley replied “And I guess that’s end of my Intelligence career then if this drug can’t leave my system” he ended.

Alaina stood with her hands on her hips watching him. “No, now I know what it is there I can have it gone in no time. One of the good things about this nasty little drug is that it is only made by a few black marketer biochemists. Each functioning sequence contains markers that could led us back to the individual maker. We could bring down a whole system of the buggers. But, no I can remove it safely from your system. I do have a slightly awkward question however Lieutenant. Since you went on your ‘vacation’ shall we say have you had sex with anyone, man or woman?”

Glad to hear the drug could safely be removed from his system, in reply to the question he said “Well, it was a ‘smash and grab’ Intelligence mission Doctor, so there really wasn’t time for anything like that, the answers no.”

Alaina could hear a snigger come from Karadis, and she smiled. “I only ask because it can be passed on by exchange of body fluids.” She programmed the bed search and withdraw the drug from his system. “You might feel a little warm during this procedure Lieutenant. “Also do you give your permission for me to keep a sample?”

Karadis was in hysterics by this point “Him ‘feeling warm’ and you wanting to ‘keep a sample’, it sounds like he’s pissed himself!”

“Thank you Karadis” Finchley replied sardonically to the Klingon, and turning to Alaina said “that’s fine Doctor.”

Alaina busied herself removing the drug from his body and taking her sample for analysis later. “Okay I’m going to give you a light sedative so you won’t move whilst your liver is repaired. Just relax Lieutenant, it will take about an hour. During that time I will also give you some fluids, electrolytes and vitamins. Nothing is too good for the pair of you after what I know you have been through but I can assure you you will feel 100 per cent better physically.”

"You mean to say you're actually going to make him look and act like he's supposed to, rather than the woos he is?" Karadis asked.

"Baring in mind you're not backwards at coming forwards that you're happy to tell people you've taught me all I know, that's pretty rich coming from you Karadis" Finchley replied.

Looking at Alaina he continued "Whatever it takes Doctor, both of us will comply."
