Paperwork.
No matter what type of mission you had. From exploration to a siege ,there was always paperwork. At least the coffee on the Oberon was good. Steven quite enjoyed a nice mug of French roast with a hint of chicory. The replicators did an acceptably good job.
“ Pure nectar.” Steven said aloud.
“ Pardon?” Said Penny.
Edgeware gave a jump. He had forgotten the door was open.Still McTaggard should of knocked.
“ Ensign did your mother not teach you to knock. “ Steven said
The stern face of his mother came across his mind. With that he had a flash memory of his old hometown back on Earth. Ballybrack a small seaside town nestled on the coast of Ireland.
“ I I I” Penny stammered driving the thoughts of his hometown away.
“ Again with the cyclops. Go and see how Dr Korial is doing.” Steven said.
His mother.
Perhaps it was the unexpected death of his father. Who drowned while trying to save a man , who had fallen into the sea. Plus his her stern warnings what would happen to him. If she ever caught him anywhere near the Irish Sea.
He preferred to play with his friends over at the Shanganagh playground over on Shanganagh Cliffs. That was his kingdom. Steven could be anybody from a valiant soldier in armour helping to drive the pirate invaders out of Ireland. To a legendary Starship Captain fighting a three headed man . He had some great adventures. In that playground.
But nine year old boys don’t stay that age for ever. Soon his mother began to push him.
“ It’s time young man for you to live up to your fathers legacy. Our do you wish his name to be forgotten forever by failing to qualify as a doctor.” She wailed.
He never understood why she never bothered with his elder sister Tina. Although clearly his mother made it known. Who her favourite was. His sister never showed any bitterness towards him. When she turned 18 Tina left home. Never to speak with their mother again. But she regularly kept in touch with him. Only recently Steven had a message from her and her husband Howard. Who Edgeware considered to be like a brother. Apparently his mother had tried to contact her. Tina & Howard refused to acknowledge the call.
Taking another sip. Steven stood and looked at a picture of himself. A fresh faced Ensign out of the Academy.
He could still hear the screams of rage, from his mother. When he told her about his acceptance into Starfleet Academy. She gave him an ultimatum.
“ If you go. Never come back!”
So he went anyway.
Edgeware supposed it was an act of defiance. Plus his tutors saying no Cadet had ever attempted it before. But Steven put his photographic memory into overdrive and took on two major subjects. Medical and Science. To everyone’s surprise he did very well. Graduating with top marks in both subjects. Something no human cadet had ever done.
He had been surprised she allowed him. Inside their home in Ballybrack. When he graduated from the academy. However the look on her face showed it all.
No pride in the achievement Steven had done. No congratulations or hugs. No surprise celebration party.Just a face like she had just sucked a very bitter lemon.
The final straw for their relationship. Came when he chose to return to the service after DS3 had vanished. This time she did indeed carry out her threat. To never speak to him again.
Steven walked back to his desk. He noticed a red light was flashing. Back when he first joined the DS3.He had put in a request for science. But the station had just lost its medical staff. So Edgeware took over as Chief Medical Officer. Now there was an opening for a new Science department head.
Without a bat of an eye lid. Steven applied for it. Maybe it was time to instead of looking for ways to fix living things . He could see how they worked and why. For a change.
