The Forgotten Outpost

Maddison entered the security department, and checked in with the admin staff to get her codes and ID authenticated. Not that she expected anyone to impersonate her.
The cyan colored woman who travelled within an aquatic field generator was quite difficult to impersonate, really.
She held up a file folder to one of the administration assistants. "Have you seen the department chief?" She asked. The music notes echoing through her suit implied a much more panicked tone than her translator managed. "I've got a top priority."
"He's in his office." the crewman answered, pointing down the corridor. "I'll let him know you're coming."
Maddison pressed the door chime for the office. "It's faster this way." She retorted, not bothering to wait for the crewman to notify him.
"Yeah, come in." Krang barked as the door chime disturbed his paper work yet again.
Maddison offered the Lieutenant a salute. "Lieutenant Junior Grade Maddison Bluefern-Ek." She held up a file. "I'm not technically even on duty yet, and I've got critical work to address. One of the civilian scrappers came across a weapons design while reclaiming an Orion vessel and it's... Extremely dangerous against our vessels, should the opposing vessel be able to use it without exploding."
"Talk about jumping into the deep end on your first day..." he said, not intended to make a pun or be offensive. "Come in and tell me what you found."
"I grew up in the deep. You get used to it." Maddison handed over the file folder. "It's a rather unique concept that's only compatible with ships and stations that do not use electro-plasma systems to transfer energy as it ignites any electro-plasma system it comes in contact with. That is the general suspicion of what happened to the vessel it was found on."
"Great Mother deliver us. This could be catastrophic. Do we know where it came from?"
"Only via inductive reasoning. There aren't many empires that don't use electro-plasma systems. The obvious one that stands out is the Romulan Star Empire." Maddison paused. "However, in order to keep my report strictly within available facts, it is worth noting that this was obtained from a pirate vessel. Other conjectures include this technology being deemed faulty by a research and development team and their government, possibly even our government, intentionally supplying it to pirates and other criminal enterprises, in order to cause them to mysteriously destroy themselves with no explainable reason. Alternatively, it was devised by an agency or government we are presently unaware of and simply coincidentally matches empires we are aware of who use vastly different power systems to our own." Maddison's lips and the song breaking through her suit had stopped some moments into this explanation, and she appeared to be patiently waiting for the translator to catch up.
"That's quite the logical pretzel you've come up with." Krang said, genuinely worried. "We should get this to Fleet HQ with extreme prejudice."
"That was precisely why I brought it to your attention as quickly as possible." Maddison nodded. "This is above and beyond a normal security concern. Fortuitously it was obtained from someone who is unlikely to attempt to make a copy and sell it to dangerous parties."
"Where did you get it. Now you have my curiosity up." Krang asked, almost afraid to hear the answer.
"An ex-SCIS officer who was discharged because he chose to save political refugees against orders." Maddison replied. "I would trust him with my life sooner than you. No offense intended."
"As long as the source is reliable, I'll forward this immediately." Krang replied.
Maddison smiled at that. "I'm a bit of a weapons expert. I can conclusively tell you that regardless of where it was obtained, they're legitimate, and a security concern. As to the reliability of the source, that's easily verifiable by Starfleet Headquarters. He quoted line, paragraph, chapter, and exact code of the defense act that permitted me to seize the object."
"Oh, no." Krang said simply. "Please, PLEASE tell me your source is not Daniels."
"He is a good man." Maddison levelled a glare. "Go ahead. Say it. Accuse him of something without any merit." She waited, patiently.
Dropping into his native tongue, Krang muttered angrily for a few moments, then changing back to Standard said "Nevermind. Is there anything else?"
Maddison switched off her own translator, and a high pitched song blasted the air around them, before turning her translator back on. "Glad we understand each other, even when we don't."
