Lieutenant JG Geno stood looking out the window of the Starfleet Cargo Transport USS Gramel. As ships went she was sturdy and able to handle heavy lifts. Currently the cargo bays held three reactor cores that when installed could power the entire space station with capacity to spare. The problem was none of them were going to be delivered to the space station. His superior described it as a wonderful new challenge for him to cut his teeth on. Calo welcomed the challenge, the opportunity to learn and grow.
As an Operations Officer he understood how important the DS3 was to Starfleet's mission. While a star ship's replicators could make most things, there were still things that needed to be produced and assembled. The reactors, the fuel for them for example. Waste products that needed processed and disposed of. People to be assigned and transported. People needed education, training, opportunities to develop their potential. This was all in his domain of expertise. Most of the command staff thought that the movements of the fleet were made by Admirals moving ships about like pieces on a game board. But the Operations Officers are the ones who make sure the supplies, the weapons, and personnel are there.
Geno was thinking about how far he had come from his time in the Cardasian prison, before Bajorians gained their freedom. Back then, he understood the importance of logistics. You take out the supply chain and the troops are easily defeated. If it is something of value that you could sell, then well, you could get rich too. That is what got Calo caught and his parents killed. He was raised to be a scavenger. When the conflict ended, Calo was sent to the university to study. He started studying technology. He was good with computers and quickly grasped the systems needed for modern life. After graduating, he went to the Starfleet Academy where he was trained as a technician. Being the low man on the pole, he ended up with the less than glamorous jobs. One of which was the paperwork. It was there that he shined helped him move into Operations.
A young woman spoke to him, breaking his thoughts.
"Would you like something to drink?" she asked.
Calo turned and smiled at her. He was very gentle with his words.
"Just water, please," He said. His understanding of the Bajorian spirituality was that the spirits did not approve of drinking. A fight in a bar neer the Academy taught him two important life lessons. The first was that there are species that can throw a punch harder than a Klingon and fight dirtier than a Romulan. The second was that you carry your scars with you. He had gotten drunk and got into a fight over a girl that did not know that he existed. He spent three days in the infirmary recovering from the beating. It was one of the flew blemishes on his personnel record.
She brought him water which he sipped. He smiled at her but was thinking about his new assignment to be thinking about her.
As they approached the station the stars shifted and came back into view. Before him was his new home. She was large and still in the process of being brought on line.
As the Gramel docked, Geno made his way to the docking station and waited for his escort to take his orders and present him to Commander Bishop.
A young crewman met Geno outside of the airlock and said "I've been instructed to take you the the command deck, Sir. If you'll follow me."
Calo followed the young crewman. Across Calo's shoulder was a real genuine leather messenger bag that contained a couple books, actual paper and pens, data pads, and a tricorder. He followed the crewman to the lift taking in what he was seeing, comparing it to the reports he had seen, to the plans that he had obtained. It was clear even at this point, there was going to be a lot of requisitions to be made. He just needed to find the funding to get what they needed. He hoped the Commander had some insight into that.
As they approached the command deck, Calo thought about taking the chain off his ear and decided against it. His Bajoran loyalty would be on his file along with his thieving past and his Cardassian prison time. His record would show his fight his freshman year and that he has been a good officer since then. As the lift stopped and they transferred to a second lift that took them the rest of the way. As Calo watched out lift he pictured a promenade filled with shops and people. He pictured a central garden with a couple fountain features where children could run and play.
As they entered the command deck, Calo admired to view from the window. The station would be someone thing when it was fully operational. The crewman took him to the Commander's office where Calo was invited to buzz. Not hearing the buzz after pushing the button. He knocked on the door panel. He took a deep breath, centered himself, and blew it out.
Calo hadn't had time to requisition the public personnel files of those assigned to the station yet. The computer here would have the details and he would have access to it. He needed to find the one thing that would set him apart. For some commanders it was alcohol, a good scotch. Others had a favorite food. Operations officers had been buttering up their CO's since time began.
Calo retrieved his data pad with his orders and credentials from the leather bag. This was a formality and part of the ritual that every officer went through.
Bishop was in the Ops center when Calo walked in. The yeoman made introductions and Bishop took the offered PaDD.
After looking through it for a few moments, the Commander said, "Everything appears to be in order. Welcome to Deep Space Three, Lieutenant."
“Thank you, Sir,” Calo replied. “What is the station’s biggest need?” He asked hoping for a place to start.
"Your number two in Ops should have a complete report for you. I recommend you start there."
Geno nodded and made his way to his new office to get started.
